my favorite it girl

Cory Kennedy, born Cory Kennedy-Levin, was only 15 years old when she met photographer Mark Hunter - a.k.a. The Cobra Snake - at a Blood Brothers concert in Los Angeles. At the time, Cory was sporting a yellow Lacoste mini dress that she made her mother buy her at the start of ninth grade. The then 20 year-old Hunter whose website - thecobrasnake.com - chronicled the downtown L.A. party/club scene through his photographs, was more than intrigued and snapped a picture of the young Cory for his website. The rest is history - never before had a teenager with a curfew reached international fame without her parent's knowledge.

The Cobra Snake's intrigue with Cory Kennedy grew as he got to know her, and photographs of Cory eating, drinking, posing, filling up her car with gas, dancing, and kissing a member of the Kings of Leon were all over his site, which was growing in popularity at the same warp speed as his adoration for Kennedy. Suddenly, Cory Kennedy had European fan sites, people were desperately stalking her via MySpace, and fashion bloggers were dissecting her wardrobe in each photo on The Cobra Snake's website. Gawker dubbed her "The Internet 'It' Girl" and fashion mavens everywhere raved about her effortlessly chic yet stylishly disheveled appearance as "a cross between the Little Match Girl and the quintessence of heroin chic." At 16, she had invites to party with Lindsay Lohan and deejays paying her to show up at their clubs (sneaking her through the back to avoid exposing her age when asked for ID at the door). By the time she was 16, Cory and Cobra Snake were a couple, he could not take his eyes off her and she was happy to oblige, posing and partying as he snapped and posted photo after photo on his website.

Cory was required to intern as a prerequisite for graduation. Noticing that her fame grew as Hunter's site expanded, she asked him for an "internship", and she and best friend, Maggy Rogow, began doing clerical work for The Cobra Snake two days a week. It wasn't long before the two were begging to join him on nights out to parties - Hunter made sure to get parental permission before risking his reputation escorting minors to night clubs. Noticing how happy Hunter made their once depressed teen daughter, Jinx Kennedy and Barry Levin agreed to allow Cory out with Hunter to take photos and help him with his equipment. However, after realizing that Cory was dating her boss 5 years her senior, Jinx insisted the two spend their time outside of work at her home, where she could keep an eye on them.

After three months of interning for Hunter, Cory, Mark Hunter and her family took a trip to New York for spring break. While there, Hunter took her to meet a friend of his, the editor in chief of Nylon magazine, who was as intrigued as Hunter had been that night at the Blood Brothers concert. He asked her to come back the next day for a photo shoot, and she was selected to be featured in a MySpace story in the June issue, due to her growing online presence. The June issue of Nylon hit stands around the same time that The New York Times ran an article mentioning Cory's relationship with the Cobra Snake. L.A. Weekly printed an article calling Cory a "club urchin," and celebrities were stopping Cory on the street to invite her to hang out with them and attend their private parties. Cory and the Cobra Snake ended their romance but her work with him continued, and her nights were getting later. Her parents began to worry. Cory began blogging to give a voice to the angelic yet seductive face in the photographs. Her worried parents decided to place her in a boarding school, so that she would be able to focus more on her education - yet somehow her face continued to be seen on fashion blogs and thecobrasnake.com and her fame continued to blossom. Cory has since been in fashion spreads, been Nylon's correspondent in many a fashion segment, and has continued to appear on Hunter's website. Her blog is bigger than ever, and her face is as attractive and hard to look away from as ever before.

Cory Kennedy gives a face and a voice to the combination of boho and heroin chic. She blogs about times and events that celebrities prefer to be kept private, and she lends an innocence to the dark world of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. Her fashion sense is aspirational and inspiring and her free spirit is undoubtedly fun to watch. Cory Kennedy and The Cobra Snake have definitely created a post-Kate Moss chapter to heroin chic, diluted by the following years of a boho luxe sensibility. Watching Cory Kennedy and her style evolve has been another fantastic west-coast contribution to the fashion industry. Keep up with her and her fashion ideas on her blog, itscorykennedy.wordpress.com!
